About The Artist
Rachel Hancock
Emerging from the Midlands and nurtured by the coastal village of Cawsand, Cornwall, the artist's journey is inextricably linked to the landscapes that have shaped her experience. Through years of study, first at Falmouth University and later pursuing an MA in Fine Art at the Arts University Plymouth, her work has evolved to capture the wild and harmonious beauty of the Devon and Cornwall regions.
The rugged coastlines of the Rame Peninsula and the serenity of the woodlands of Bellever and Shaugh Prior have become intrinsic to her practice, each landscape a testament to her deep personal connection with these places.
Her use of colour mirrors the landscapes’ state of stillness with a palette that conveys the peacefulness, vitality, and emotional depth of the natural world. With soothing hues of green and blues with dashes of
soft shades of peachy pinks and oranges that contrast with the deep tones of green and blue in her work creating atmosphere. In each stroke, there is an intent to capture not only the visual aspects but the profound sense of peace these environments evoke.
Her work does not aim to simply depict a scene, but to transport viewers into the very heart of these natural spaces, allowing them to share in the contemplation and harmony she herself finds there. Each canvas or etching she produces becomes a journey—a celebration of memory and place, where land and the human spirit are intertwined. Her work evokes a timeless bond, reminding us of the enduring beauty and stillness that nature offers to those who seek it. Through her work, the landscapes of Devon and Cornwall are not only seen but felt, creating a sensory dialogue between the viewer and the natural world, into rest.
